Technology to Showcase the Value of Education

How Can Technology Convince Students of the Value of Higher Education? With fewer high school graduates choosing college, technology has a unique role in reigniting students’ belief in higher education. Imagine a high school student eagerly checking the mail and finding an acceptance letter from their dream college, ready to start a journey filled with opportunities, lifelong friends, and a promising future. Just a couple of decades ago, that was a common story. Today, many high schoolers aren’t looking for acceptance letters at all, uncertain if college is the best or even most practical path to success. Higher education now faces a new challenge: proving its worth to students who are increasingly weighing their options. Universities no longer simply wait for students to apply—they need to actively demonstrate that the investment will pay off. Enrollment Data Signals a Shift Away from College Once seen as a distinctive achievement, college attendance has become less of a given. In 1980, only 49% of high school graduates went on to higher education. By 2009, that number had surged to over 70%, but has since declined; by 2022, just 62% of graduates were heading straight to college. Now, with the “enrollment cliff”—a projected decrease in college-aged students due to lower birth rates—looming, colleges face intense competition to attract students. Personalization Is Key to Connecting with Students The days of “Dear applicant” are over. Today’s digital-native students want a personalized approach that speaks directly to them. If they don’t feel personally addressed through email, text, video, or even traditional mail, they may tune out and explore other options. Universities must build meaningful connections to engage students and keep their attention through every stage of the student journey. Student lifecycle management platforms, like Salesforce’s Education Cloud, have become essential tools for higher education institutions. By tracking and analyzing a student’s data—academic performance, extracurricular interests, and social behaviors—these platforms create personalized experiences that engage students from admission to graduation. Salesforce Education Cloud, for example, uses AI and robust data analytics to create a comprehensive student profile, enabling colleges to send tailored communications, schedule regular check-ins, and even reach out to parents. This personalized approach fosters a sense of connection that encourages students to enroll and stay engaged throughout their academic journey. Comprehensive Lifecycle Management and Student Support Beyond admissions, student lifecycle platforms offer extensive features that address other critical areas, from helping students who are academically struggling to managing alumni relationships and fundraising. With years of experience in supporting institutions nationwide, CDW Education partners with colleges to implement these technologies, strengthening their ability to attract, engage, and retain students. In an era when students have more educational choices than ever, colleges must actively communicate the value of a college degree and make that message resonate with each individual. By investing in technology that personalizes the student experience, higher education institutions can create a compelling case for the unique value they offer. AI-Driven Chatbots in Education

AI-Driven Chatbots in Education

As AI-driven chatbots enter college courses, the potential to offer students 24/7 support is game-changing. However, there’s a critical caveat: when we customize chatbots by uploading documents, we don’t just add knowledge — we introduce biases. The documents we choose influence chatbot responses, subtly shaping how students interact with course material and, ultimately, how they think. So, how can we ensure that AI chatbots promote critical thinking rather than merely serving to reinforce our own viewpoints? How Course Chatbots Differ from Administrative Chatbots Chatbot teaching assistants have been around for some time in education, but low-cost access to large language models (LLMs) and accessible tools now make it easy for instructors to create customized course chatbots. Unlike chatbots used in administrative settings that rely on a defined “ground truth” (e.g., policy), educational chatbots often cover nuanced and debated topics. While instructors typically bring specific theories or perspectives to the table, a chatbot trained with tailored content can either reinforce a single view or introduce a range of academic perspectives. With tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Copilot, instructors can upload specific documents to fine-tune chatbot responses. This customization allows a chatbot to provide nuanced responses, often aligned with course-specific materials. But, unlike administrative chatbots that reference well-defined facts, course chatbots require ethical responsibility due to the subjective nature of academic content. Curating Content for Classroom Chatbots Having a 24/7 teaching assistant can be a powerful resource, and today’s tools make it easy to upload course documents and adapt LLMs to specific curricula. Options like OpenAI’s GPT Assistant, IBL’s AI Mentor, and Druid’s Conversational AI allow instructors to shape the knowledge base of course-specific chatbots. However, curating documents goes beyond technical ease — the content chosen affects not only what students learn but also how they think. The documents you select will significantly shape, though not dictate, chatbot responses. Combined with the LLM’s base model, chatbot instructions, and the conversation context, the curated content influences chatbot output — for better or worse — depending on your instructional goals. Curating for Critical Thinking vs. Reinforcing Bias A key educational principle is teaching students “how to think, not what to think.” However, some educators may, even inadvertently, lean toward dictating specific viewpoints when curating content. It’s critical to recognize the potential for biases that could influence students’ engagement with the material. Here are some common biases to be mindful of when curating chatbot content: While this list isn’t exhaustive, it highlights the complexities of curating content for educational chatbots. It’s important to recognize that adding data shifts — not erases — inherent biases in the LLM’s responses. Few academic disciplines offer a single, undisputed “truth.” AI-Driven Chatbots in Education. Tips for Ethical and Thoughtful Chatbot Curation Here are some practical tips to help you create an ethically balanced course chatbot: This approach helps prevent a chatbot from merely reflecting a single perspective, instead guiding students toward a broader understanding of the material. Ethical Obligations As educators, our ethical obligations extend to ensuring transparency about curated materials and explaining our selection choices. If some documents represent what you consider “ground truth” (e.g., on climate change), it’s still crucial to include alternative views and equip students to evaluate the chatbot’s outputs critically. Equity Customizing chatbots for educational use is powerful but requires deliberate consideration of potential biases. By curating diverse perspectives, being transparent in choices, and refining chatbot content, instructors can foster critical thinking and more meaningful student engagement. AI-Driven Chatbots in Education AI-powered chatbots are interactive tools that can help educational institutions streamline communication and improve the learning experience. They can be used for a variety of purposes, including: Some examples of AI chatbots in education include: While AI chatbots can be a strategic move for educational institutions, it’s important to balance innovation with the privacy and security of student data.  Like Related Posts Salesforce OEM AppExchange Expanding its reach beyond CRM, Salesforce.com has launched a new service called AppExchange OEM Edition, aimed at non-CRM service providers. Education Cloud Program Objects

Education Cloud Program Objects

Use program objects to track how your learning offerings are structured and administered, and what they require for enrollment and completion. Education Cloud Program Objects let you customize all your programs for ease of use. Programs can be degree or credential programs, academic support programs, recreational programs, continuing education, and more. We use the same architectural building blocks to model each of them in Education Cloud. A Sample Degree Program Offering See an example of how Education Cloud objects represent a program offering. The Biological Sciences Department at Astro University offers an undergraduate Biology degree. This degree program is represented with these objects. To earn the B.S. Biology degree, students complete a sequence of study defined in the university’s course catalog. These high-level requirements for the degree are organized using the learning program plan object. For the student cohort enrolling in the 2023–2024 academic year, a learning program plan record named Biology Catalog Year 2023–2024 represents the set of requirements in effect at that time. When Astro University finalizes its catalog for the next academic year, requirements likely changed slightly and are captured in another Program Plan record named Biology Catalog Year 2024–2025. The learning program plan object represents a general set of requirements. The learning program plan requirement object represents the specific requirements, such as required courses, thesis work, or an internship. To help organize your programs, we recommend that you create accounts for each department or college in your institution. Then, when you create records, assign them to the appropriate account. Manage your program offerings with the Academic Operations app. Like Related Posts Salesforce OEM AppExchange Expanding its reach beyond CRM, Salesforce.com has launched a new service called AppExchange OEM Edition, aimed at non-CRM service providers. From career counseling to mentoring, these apps provide the tools needed to manage a wide range of support programs effectively. With the Student Success and Mentoring apps, Education Cloud provides robust program management features that allow institutions to scale these initiatives efficiently.
