Salesforce has expanded its Service Cloud capabilities to include a new HR-focused solution, Employee Service, designed to streamline employee support and enhance productivity. Employee Service introduces a dedicated HR service console paired with an employee portal. This portal acts as a centralized hub for staff to access HR resources, offering instant answers via Generative AI (GenAI), direct communication with HR specialists across multiple channels, and self-service options for tasks like requesting paid time off (PTO). For HR teams, the service console consolidates employee data, case details, and a company’s knowledge base into a unified workspace. It leverages AI-driven tools to resolve cases faster, automate routine tasks, and deliver seamless employee experiences. Salesforce’s Agentforce customers can integrate AI agents into Employee Service to further automate processes, saving time and reducing repetitive workloads. In a LinkedIn announcement, Kishan Chetan, EVP and GM for Service Cloud, highlighted the solution’s potential: “This new solution unifies employee data, case details, and a company’s corporate knowledge base all in one workspace that gives HR teams a 360-degree view of each employee and the ability to manage employee support cases with built-in AI and productivity tools. HR teams can efficiently resolve employee issues using Agentforce to quickly search, respond, summarize, and close cases, extending teams to get work done faster.” Salesforce’s broader goal is to eliminate the reliance on fragmented HR tools and reduce the need for employees to navigate disparate platforms like email, internal systems, and collaboration tools to complete HR-related tasks. By doing so, Salesforce aims to simplify HR processes, minimize manual effort, and enhance overall productivity. Early adopters of Employee Service are already reporting significant results. The Hesitation Towards Digital Workers It appears that people are not ready for “digital workers” just yet. This is the lesson Sarah Franklin, CEO of Lattice, a human resources and performance management platform, has learned. Lattice offers tools such as performance coaching, talent reviews, onboarding automation, and compensation management to over 5,000 organizations worldwide. Discovering the entire workplace is Not Ready For All That AI shouldn’t be so surprising. What is a Digital Employee? According to Franklin, digital employees are avatars like Devin the engineer, Harvey the lawyer, Einstein the service agent, and Piper the sales agent, who have “entered the workforce and become our colleagues.” These are not real workers; they are AI-powered bots introduced by companies like Salesforce and startups like Cognition.ai and Qualified to perform tasks in lieu of humans. For instance, Salesforce’s Einstein helps sales and marketing professionals predict revenues, complete tasks, and liaise with prospects. Cognition’s software engineer Devin plans and executes complex engineering tasks, learning and correcting mistakes over time. Qualified’s sales rep Piper converts inbound website traffic into pipeline, working tirelessly without the need for health insurance, paid time off, or retirement plans. Lattice’s Bold Move Seeing an opportunity, Franklin announced on July 9 that Lattice would begin supporting digital employees as part of its platform, treating them like any other employee. She proclaimed, “Today Lattice is making AI history. We will be the first to give digital workers official employee records in Lattice. Digital workers will be securely onboarded, trained, and assigned goals, performance metrics, appropriate systems access, and even a manager, just as any person would be.” The Backlash The pushback was immediate and intense, particularly on LinkedIn. Sawyer Middeleer, an executive at a firm using AI for sales research, criticized the move, saying, “Treating AI agents as employees disrespects the humanity of your real employees. Worse, it implies that you view humans simply as ‘resources’ to be optimized and measured against machines.” Scott Burgess, a self-employed marketing executive, was even more direct, calling the move “terrifying” and expressing concerns about the impact on human workers. The backlash was strong enough to force Franklin to suspend the plans just three days after the announcement. The Reality of AI While these concerns are legitimate, the question remains: aren’t “digital employees” inevitable? AI is currently overhyped. Embarrassing AI failures from Google, the underwhelming performance of Microsoft’s Copilot AI, and the rudimentary capabilities of current digital assistants demonstrate that AI is still in its infancy. Most executives view AI at this stage as untrustworthy. Timing is Everything Franklin made the same mistake that Microsoft, Google, and other big tech platforms have made: overhyping something not yet ready for prime time to gain a marketing edge. Her vision was not flawed, but the execution was premature. AI is still early in its development, and society is still grappling with its implications. Digital employees will undoubtedly work alongside human employees in the future, but clearly, that future is not today. Many artists, writers, musicians, and creators are facing fears that AI is taking over their jobs. On the surface, generative AI tools can replicate work in moments that previously took creators hours to produce—often at a fraction of the cost and with similar quality. This shift has led many businesses to adopt AI for content creation, leaving creators worried about their livelihoods. Yet, there’s another way to view this situation, one that offers hope to creators everywhere. AI, at its core, is a tool of mimicry. When provided with enough data, it can replicate a style or subject with reasonable accuracy. Most of this data has been scraped from the internet, often without explicit consent, to train AI models on a wide variety of creative outputs. If you’re a creator, it’s likely that pieces of your work have contributed to the training of these AI models. Your art, words, and ideas have helped shape what these systems now consider ‘good’ in the realms of art, music, and writing. AI can combine the styles of multiple creators to generate something new, but often these creations fall flat. Why? While image-generating AI can predict pixels, it lacks an understanding of human emotions. It knows what a smile looks like but can’t grasp the underlying feelings of joy, nervousness, or flirtation that make a smile truly meaningful. AI can only generate a superficial replica unless the creator uses extensive prompt engineering to convey the context behind that smile. Emotion is uniquely human, and it’s what makes our creations resonate with others. A single brushstroke from a human artist can convey emotions that might take thousands of words to replicate through an AI prompt. We’ve all heard the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” But generating that picture with AI often takes many more words. Input a short prompt, and the AI will enhance it with more words, often leading to results that stray from your original vision. To achieve a specific outcome, you may need hours of prompt engineering, trial, and error—and even then, the result might not be quite right. Without a human artist to guide the process, these generated works will often remain unimpressive, no matter how advanced the technology becomes. That’s where you, the creator, come in. By introducing your own inputs, such as images or sketches, and using workflows like those in ComfyUI, you can exert more control over the outputs. AI becomes less of a replacement for the artist and more of a tool or collaborator. It can help speed up the creative process but still relies on the artist’s hand to guide it toward a meaningful result. Artists like Martin Nebelong have embraced this approach, treating AI as just another tool in their creative toolbox. Nebelong uses high levels of control in AI-driven workflows to create works imbued with his personal emotional touch. He shares these workflows on platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter, encouraging other creators to explore how AI can speed up their processes while retaining the unique artistry that only humans can provide. Nebelong’s philosophy is clear: “I’m pro-creativity, pro-art, and pro-AI. Our tools change, the scope of what we can do changes. I don’t think creative AI tools or models have found their best form yet; they’re flawed, raw, and difficult to control. But I’m excited for when they find that form and can act as an extension of our hands, our brush, and as an amplifier of our artistic intent.” AI can help bring an artist 80% of the way to a finished product, but it’s the final 20%—the part where human skill and emotional depth come in—that elevates the piece to something truly remarkable. Think about the notorious issues with AI-generated hands. Often, the output features too many fingers or impossible poses, a telltale sign of AI’s limitations. An artist is still needed to refine the details, correct mistakes, and bring the creation in line with reality. While using AI may be faster than organizing a full photoshoot or painting from scratch, the artist’s role has shifted from full authorship to that of a collaborator, guiding AI toward a polished result. Nebelong often starts with his own artwork and integrates AI-generated elements, using them to enhance but never fully replace his vision. He might even use AI to generate 3D models, lighting, or animations, but the result is always driven by his creativity. For him, AI is just another step in the creative journey, not a shortcut or replacement for human effort. However, AI’s ability to replicate the styles of famous artists and public figures raises ethical concerns.
