APIs and Software Development

APIs and Software Development

The Role of APIs in Modern Software Development APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) are central to modern software development, enabling teams to integrate external features into their products, including advanced third-party AI systems. For instance, you can use an API to allow users to generate 3D models from prompts on MatchboxXR. The Rise of AI-Powered Applications Many startups focus exclusively on AI, but often they are essentially wrappers around existing technologies like ChatGPT. These applications provide specialized user interfaces for interacting with OpenAI’s GPT models rather than developing new AI from scratch. Some branding might make it seem like they’re creating groundbreaking technology, when in reality, they’re leveraging pre-built AI solutions. Solopreneur-Driven Wrappers Large Language Models (LLMs) enable individuals and small teams to create lightweight apps and websites with AI features quickly. A quick search on Reddit reveals numerous small-scale startups offering: Such features can often be built using ChatGPT or Gemini within minutes for free. Well-Funded Ventures Larger operations invest heavily in polished platforms but may allocate significant budgets to marketing and design. This raises questions about whether these ventures are also just sophisticated wrappers. Examples include: While these products offer interesting functionalities, they often rely on APIs to interact with LLMs, which brings its own set of challenges. The Impact of AI-First, API-Second Approaches Design Considerations Looking Ahead Developer Experience: As AI technologies like LLMs become mainstream, focusing on developer experience (DevEx) will be crucial. Good DevEx involves well-structured schemas, flexible functions, up-to-date documentation, and ample testing data. Future Trends: The future of AI will likely involve more integrations. Imagine: AI is powerful, but the real innovation lies in integrating hardware, data, and interactions effectively. SearchGPT and Knowledge Cutoff

SearchGPT and Knowledge Cutoff

Tackling the Knowledge Cutoff Challenge in Generative AI In the realm of generative AI, a significant hurdle has been the issue of knowledge cutoff—where a large language model (LLM) only has information up until a specific date. This was an early concern with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. For example, the GPT-4o model that currently powers ChatGPT has a knowledge cutoff in October 2023. The older GPT-4 model, on the other hand, had a cutoff in September 2021. Traditional search engines like Google, however, don’t face this limitation. Google continuously crawls the internet to keep its index up to date with the latest information. To address the knowledge cutoff issue in LLMs, multiple vendors, including OpenAI, are exploring search capabilities powered by generative AI (GenAI). Introducing SearchGPT: OpenAI’s GenAI Search Engine SearchGPT is OpenAI’s GenAI search engine, first announced on July 26, 2024. It aims to combine the strengths of a traditional search engine with the capabilities of GPT LLMs, eliminating the knowledge cutoff by drawing real-time data from the web. SearchGPT is currently a prototype, available to a limited group of test users, including individuals and publishers. OpenAI has invited publishers to ensure their content is accurately represented in search results. The service is positioned as a temporary offering to test and evaluate its performance. Once this evaluation phase is complete, OpenAI plans to integrate SearchGPT’s functionality directly into the ChatGPT interface. As of August 2024, OpenAI has not announced when SearchGPT will be generally available or integrated into the main ChatGPT experience. Key Features of SearchGPT SearchGPT offers several features designed to enhance the capabilities of ChatGPT: OpenAI’s Challenge to Google Search Google has long dominated the search engine landscape, a position that OpenAI aims to challenge with SearchGPT. Answers, Not Links Traditional search engines like Google act primarily as indexes, pointing users to other sources of information rather than directly providing answers. Google has introduced AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience or SGE) to offer AI-generated summaries, but it still relies heavily on linking to third-party websites. SearchGPT aims to change this by providing direct answers to user queries, summarizing the source material instead of merely pointing to it. Contextual Continuity In contrast to Google’s point-in-time search queries, where each query is independent, SearchGPT strives to maintain context across multiple queries, offering a more seamless and coherent search experience. Search Accuracy Google Search often depends on keyword matching, which can require users to sift through several pages to find relevant information. SearchGPT aims to combine real-time data with an LLM to deliver more contextually accurate and relevant information. Ad-Free Experience SearchGPT offers an ad-free interface, providing a cleaner and more user-friendly experience compared to Google, which includes ads in its search results. AI-Powered Search Engine Comparison Here’s a comparison of the AI-powered search engines available today: Search Engine Platform Integration Publisher Collaboration Ads Cost SearchGPT (OpenAI) Standalone prototype Strong emphasis Ad-free Free (prototype stage) Google SGE Built on Google’s infrastructure SEO practices, content partnerships Includes ads Free Microsoft Bing AI/Copilot Built on Microsoft’s infrastructure SEO practices, content partnerships Includes ads Free Perplexity AI Standalone Basic source attribution Ad-free Free; $20/month for premium You.com AI assistant with various modes Basic source attribution Ad-free Free; premium tiers available Brave Search Independent search index Basic source attribution Ad-free Free Like Related Posts Salesforce OEM AppExchange Expanding its reach beyond CRM, Salesforce.com has launched a new service called AppExchange OEM Edition, aimed at non-CRM service providers. Enhanced Analytics Dive deeper into lead behavior and trends with comprehensive analytics tools that provide detailed reports and predictive insights. Detailed Lead Profiles Access in-depth lead profiles directly from the heatmap, including contact details, engagement history, and quick shortcuts for a complete view of each lead. Online Chat Integration Interact with leads instantly using integrated online chat, facilitating immediate and personalized communication. All website pages have a purpose, whether that purpose is to drive further clicks, qualify visitors, provide a solution, or even a mix of all of those things. Heatmaps and recorded user sessions allow you to see if your page is serving that purpose or going against it. What Is a Heatmap? Generally speaking, heatmaps are graphical representations of data that highlight value with color. On a website heatmap, the most popular areas are showcased in red (hot) and the least popular are in blue (cold). The colors range on a scale from red to blue. Heatmaps are an excellent method of collecting user behavior data and converting it into a deep analysis of how visitors engage with your website pages. It can analyze: That information will help you identify user trends and key into what should be optimized to up engagement. Setting up website heatmapping software is a great start to refining your website design process and understanding your users. When to Use Heatmaps The truth is that heatmaps can actually be invaluable when testing and optimizing user experiences and conversion opportunities. There are many times you should be using them. Redesigning Your Website Updating, or even upgrading, your website isn’t just a task on your to do list. Careful thought, attention, and creativity should be put into the revamp if you want it to be worth the time and resources. Heatmaps can help with studying your current design to identify what your visitors are engaging with and what they’re ignoring. You’ll be tapped into what makes your visitors tick so that you can build a site meant specifically for your unique audience. Analyzing Webpage Conversions Trying to figure out why certain pages aren’t converting the way you thought they would? Use a heatmap. You’ll be able to identify exactly what’s attracting attention and deduce why. The same goes for buttons and pages that are showing a higher rate of conversion than anticipated. By keying into the design, copy, and other elements that are working for you, you’ll know exactly how to optimize your under-performing webpages. Testing New Updates As your business grows and you develop new ideas, naturally you’ll want to test them. A/B testing allows you to measure and analyze visitor response to a project or design, but you can take it a step further with heatmapping. Leverage the data graph by examining exactly what captures your visitors’ attention. At the end of the testing period, you may be able to pull designs or elements that received high levels of engagement from the page that didn’t perform as well into the successful one. How To Analyze Visually Using the color-coded visualizations, you can read your webpage for engagement levels and attention “hot spots.” Where the map reads red, that’s where visitors are showing the highest points of interactivity. Blue reflects low numbers. You can spot design issues or opportunities to move buttons, forms, and the like with a visual read. Data Points Reviewing raw data tables will give you more specific insights into your page’s performance. You can examine HTML elements and pixel locations of clicks to really understand what’s drawing people in. You can even filter your clicks and views in order of popularity with certain software. This takes the guessing out of your redesign and testing efforts. Tableau has instant, real-time reporting in place for users looking for actionable insights. With smart dashboards and a drag and drop interface, navigating the product is easy. Their cloud storage means omni-channel data access from anywhere. You can perform ad hoc analyses whenever it’s convenient for you. You can also share your reports with anyone to boost business impact. With built in A/B testing and consolidated heatmaps, Freshmarketer puts in the extra effort to plot out visitor interactions. Recorded in real time, you can analyze heatmaps based by device, which the software automatically detects. Offering scrollmaps and click maps, Freshmarketer strives to “go beyond traditional heatmaps.” Looker offers similar services to the other software options listed, but they also supply a unique security management feature to protect your data. Also partnered with Google Cloud, you’ll have access to reporting from anywhere in the world. Primarily a data analysis solution, you’ll have access to other data intelligence and visualization features as well. Hotjar is one of the most popular website analytics software suites, offering free heatmaps for desktop, mobile, and tablet within its basic subscription plan. You can create heatmaps and synergize them with other free features like user session recordings, surveys, and

Google Says I'm Sorry

Google Says I’m Sorry

Google Apologizes for Chrome Password Manager Bug Affecting Windows Users Google has issued an apology after a bug prevented many Windows users from accessing or saving their passwords through Chrome’s password manager. The issue, which began on July 24 and lasted for nearly 18 hours before being resolved on July 25, was attributed to “a change in product behavior without proper feature guard.” This explanation may sound familiar to those affected by recent disruptions in similar services. The bug affected Chrome users globally, rendering previously saved passwords invisible and preventing the storage of new passwords. Google clarified that the problem was limited to the M127 version of Chrome Browser on the Windows platform. Impact of the Bug on Users The exact number of users affected by this bug is challenging to determine. However, given that Chrome has over 3 billion users worldwide, with a significant portion using Windows, a considerable number were impacted. Google stated that 25% of users were subjected to the configuration change, equating to roughly 750 million people. Of these, around 2%, or approximately 15 million users, experienced the password manager issue. Resolution and Interim Measures Google provided an interim workaround that required users to start Chrome with the command line flag “–enable-features=SkipUndecryptablePasswords.” However, a more user-friendly fix has since been deployed, which simply requires users to restart their Chrome browser. Google thanked users for their patience and apologized for the inconvenience caused by the disruption. They advised users experiencing additional issues to contact Google Workspace Support. Using Google’s Chrome Password Manager To access Google’s Chrome password manager, users can go to the browser’s three-dot menu and select Passwords and Autofill, then Google Password Manager. Alternatively, the password manager Chrome app can be installed from the settings, allowing direct access from the Google apps menu. Users prompted to autofill a password can also select “manage passwords” to reach the manager. For those considering switching from a standalone password manager to Google’s service, the process is straightforward. Users can export passwords from their current manager in a .CSV file, ensuring it is correctly formatted. They can then import this file into Google’s system through passwords.google.com, choosing Settings|Import. After importing, users should delete the .CSV file to protect their data. While Google’s Chrome password manager is convenient, it may not offer the same level of security as dedicated password managers, which often include features like two-factor authentication, secure password generation, and more robust encryption methods. For instance, services like 1Password use end-to-end encryption, 256-bit AES encryption, and other advanced security features to protect user data. Recent Google Security Issues In addition to the Chrome password manager issue, Google has recently addressed another security lapse involving email verification for new Google Workspace accounts. According to cybersecurity reporter Brian Krebs, this flaw allowed bad actors to bypass email verification during account setup, potentially leading to impersonation attacks. Google fixed this vulnerability within 72 hours of it being reported, ensuring no domains previously associated with Workspace accounts were affected. Google Wiz and Cybersecurity

Google Wiz and Cybersecurity

Google is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire Israeli cybersecurity firm Wiz for up to $23 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal. While the sum is substantial, some have expressed surprising discontent, viewing it as “very good, but not great.” This sentiment revolves around the missed opportunity for an IPO and the loss of an Israeli giant that will no longer grow locally. Additionally, if Wiz had been registered in Israel, the transaction would have generated higher revenues for the state treasury. Google Wiz and Cybersecurity certainly aren’t hard to fathom. Founded by Assaf Rappaport, a former officer from Israel’s elite 8200 intelligence unit, Wiz has quickly risen in value. The unit has a track record of producing tech entrepreneurs, significantly contributing to Israel’s robust tech industry. The potential deal underscores the resilience of Israel’s tech sector, which accounts for about 20% of the country’s output and 15% of jobs, even as the war in Gaza pressures the economy. However, with today’s massive cyber attack inadvertently caused by a cybersecurity company, some may hesitate to make such an investment. The attack, linked to a faulty system update from CrowdStrike, a U.S. firm used by over half of Fortune 500 companies, resulted in widespread disruptions. These included grounding flights, hampering public transit systems, and affecting operations at banks and hospitals globally. CrowdStrike’s CEO, George Kurtz, apologized for the disruptions and noted that the issue had been identified and resolved. The incident, not a security breach or cyberattack, caused Microsoft Windows systems to crash, affecting public transit systems, stock exchanges, and various institutions worldwide. Google Wiz and Cybersecurity Despite this, Google’s acquisition of Wiz appears strategically sound, aiming to enhance its cloud security capabilities and position Google Cloud as a major competitor to Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. The advanced technology from Wiz will help Google close the gap in the fiercely competitive cloud security market. Cybersecurity expert Chuck Brooks sees the acquisition as a game-changer, enhancing Google’s ability to conduct comprehensive threat assessments on IT infrastructure and improving DevOps processes. By integrating Wiz’s framework, Google aims to streamline development jobs and make them more secure. However, such bold mergers are not without risk. Tech advisor Vaclav Vincalek cautions that mega transactions can be dangerous for both companies, citing historical examples like Microsoft’s acquisitions of Skype and Nokia, and Google’s purchase of Motorola. Pierre Bourgeix, CEO and Founder of ESI Convergint, believes the acquisition could position Google to compete head-to-head with Amazon, especially given Microsoft Azure’s recent security breaches. Omri Weinberg, Co-Founder and CRO of DoControl, views the deal as a significant statement about the importance of cloud security. In summary, Google’s potential $23 billion acquisition of Wiz not only highlights the value of Israel’s tech talent but also represents a strategic move to enhance its cloud security capabilities. This positions Google as a major force in the cybersecurity market, with the potential to set new standards for cloud security and influence industry best practices. More on today’s outage Public transit systems in the U.S. reported impacts. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in Washington, D.C., said its “website and some of our internal systems are currently down,” but that trains and buses were running as scheduled. In New York City, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority also said its buses and trains were unaffected but that “some MTA customer information systems are temporarily offline due to a worldwide technical outage.” Around the world, the outages disrupted London’s Stock Exchange, caused major train delays in the U.K., sent British broadcaster Sky News off air, forced medical facilities in Europe and the U.S. to cancel some services and caused disruptions at airports in Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong and India. Some U.S. border crossings saw impacts amid the outage: Traffic stalled on the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Detroit with Windsor, Ontario, Canada, as well as at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, the Detroit Free Press reported. CBP One, the Customs and Border Patrol app, and the agency’s border wait times website, each appeared to experience outages. On a sweeter note, Krispy Kreme is giving away free doughnuts Friday due to the global tech outage. Dubai International Airport said on X it is operating normally following “a global system outage that affected the check-in process for some airlines.” It added the affected airlines “promptly switched to an alternate system, allowing normal check-in operations to resume swiftly.” Portland, Oregon, Mayor Ted Wheeler issued an emergency declaration Friday over the tech outage, with a statement noting the outages are affecting city servers, employee computers and emergency communications. Meanwhile, the Maryland Department of Emergency Management increased its state activation level from “normal” to “partial,” citing the tech outage. A post on X says a “partial” activation is for incidents that require “significant monitoring or resources,” with additional emergency operations staffing from other agencies, functions and supporting organizations. CrowdStrike is a popular cybersecurity software company created in 2012 by CEO George Kurtz, along with Dmitri Alperovitch, and Gregg Marston. According to its website, CrowdStrike has the “world’s most advanced cloud-native platform that protects and enables the people, processes and technologies that drive modern enterprise.” According to an alert sent by CrowdStrike to its clients and reviewed by Reuters, the company’s “Falcon Sensor” software caused Microsoft Windows to crash and display a blue screen, known informally as the “Blue Screen of Death.” Kurtz said “there was an issue with a Falcon content update for Windows Hosts” but customers “remain fully protected,” according to Kurtz’s post on X. The CrowdStrike outage crashed some computers at colleges Friday and hampered a popular software for enrolling students in K-12 schools for the fall. The University of Rochester, a private school in New York, told students to keep rebooting their systems until the problem was fixed. The University of Alabama’s technology office said its campus computers using Microsoft Windows crashed. Rutgers University and the University of Kentucky also reported disruptions. State and local law enforcement agencies across the country reported disruptions to 911 services after

Used YouTube to Train AI

Used YouTube to Train AI

Announced by siliconANGLE’s Duncan Riley. Companies Used YouTube to Train AI. A new report released today reveals that companies such as Anthropic PBC, Nvidia Corp., Apple Inc., and Salesforce Inc. have used subtitles from YouTube videos to train their AI services without obtaining permission. This raises significant ethical questions about the use of publicly available materials and facts without consent. According to Proof News, these companies allegedly utilized subtitles from 173,536 YouTube videos sourced from over 48,000 channels to enhance their AI models. Rather than scraping the content themselves, Anthropic, Nvidia, Apple, and Salesforce reportedly used a dataset provided by EleutherAI, a nonprofit AI organization. EleutherAI, founded in 2020, focuses on the interpretability and alignment of large AI models. The organization aims to democratize access to advanced AI technologies by developing and releasing open-source AI models like GPT-Neo and GPT-J. EleutherAI also advocates for open science norms in natural language processing, promoting transparency and ethical AI development. The dataset in question, known as “YouTube Subtitles,” includes transcripts from educational and online learning channels, as well as several media outlets and YouTube personalities. Notable YouTubers whose transcripts are included in the dataset are Mr. Beast, Marques Brownlee, PewDiePie, and left-wing political commentator David Pakman. Some creators whose content was used are outraged. Pakman, for example, argues that using his transcripts jeopardizes his livelihood and that of his staff. David Wiskus, CEO of streaming service Nebula, has even called the use of the data “theft.” Despite the data being publicly accessible, the controversy revolves around the fact that large language models are utilizing it. This situation echoes recent legal actions regarding the use of publicly available data to train AI models. For instance, Microsoft Corp. and OpenAI were sued in November over their use of nonfiction authors’ works for AI training. The class-action lawsuit, led by a New York Times reporter, claimed that OpenAI scraped the content of hundreds of thousands of nonfiction books to develop their AI models. Additionally, The New York Times accused OpenAI, Google LLC, and Meta Holdings Inc. in April of skirting legal boundaries in their use of AI training data. While the legality of using AI training data remains a gray area, it has yet to be extensively tested in court. Should a case arise, the key issue will likely be whether publicly stated facts, including utterances, can be copyrighted. Relevant U.S. case law includes Feist Publications Inc. v. Rural Telephone Service Co., 499 U.S. 340 (1991) and International News Service v. Associated Press (1918). In both cases, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that facts cannot be copyrighted. Do GPT 4o lies abound?

Do GPT 4o lies abound?

Is OpenAI (and others) misleading us about the pace of AI improvement? Do GPT 4o lies abound? Is AI excessively hyped, akin to the “NFT moment” that led to a subsequent downturn? Or even the dot com bubble that eventually had to burst? Daily updates on AI developments are a routine part of many AI enthusiasts reading. People tend to vacillate between the idea that we’re approaching AGI (artificial general intelligence) swiftly or hitting a plateau in LLM capabilities. Compelling arguments exist on both sides. This insight explores the notion that AI might be overly hyped. Do GPT 4o lies abound is a question being asked around the web. GPT-4o is used daily by millions of people. Observations by AI evangelists, suggest a decline in GPT-4o’s capabilities since its release. Though anecdotal, the decline is noticeable. For instance, tasks like placing affiliate links in articles are sometimes mishandled by GPT-4o, which previously performed better. The model’s abilities appear to fluctuate over time. Changing tense or tone sometimes barely happens at all and sometimes completely rewrites and changes the original meaning. While GPT-4o is notably fast, its accuracy and comprehension of instructions seem inferior to even GPT-4. OpenAI has a motive to promote GPT-4o over GPT-4 due to electricity cost savings, which are considerable. Emphasizing the speed and downplaying capability might ensure user satisfaction and maintain Plus memberships. Why it suspected AI might be overhyped? Companies have financial incentives to exaggerate AI’s capabilities to attract attention and funding.Instances of companies exaggerating claims during AI demonstrations have been documented (Google, OpenAI, Amazon, etc.).Personal experiences indicate many AI models are slowing down.Despite exponentially increasing model parameters, performance improvements are not proportional (you can’t get more juice from a lemon by squeezing harder). Some argue that AI models are made to sound more human-emulating voice, potentially blurring the line between genuine intelligence and simulated behavior. This insight believes the most advanced AI models surpass current presentations but are not energy-efficient enough for widespread affordability. Consequently, model capabilities are deliberately limited. What say you. AI Confidence Scores

AI Confidence Scores

In this insight, the focus is on exploring the use of confidence scores available through the OpenAI API. The first section delves into these scores and explains their significance using a custom chat interface. The second section demonstrates how to apply confidence scores programmatically in code. Understanding Confidence Scores To begin, it’s important to understand what an LLM (Large Language Model) is doing for each token in its response: However, it’s essential to clarify that the term “probabilities” here is somewhat misleading. While mathematically, they qualify as a “probability distribution” (the values add up to one), they don’t necessarily reflect true confidence or likelihood in the way we might expect. In this sense, these values should be treated with caution. A useful way to think about these values is to consider them as “confidence” scores, though it’s crucial to remember that, much like humans, LLMs can be confident and still be wrong. The values themselves are not inherently meaningful without additional context or validation. Example: Using a Chat Interface An example of exploring these confidence scores can be seen in a chat interface where: In one case, when asked to “pick a number,” the LLM chose the word “choose” despite it having only a 21% chance of being selected. This demonstrates that LLMs don’t always pick the most likely token unless configured to do so. Additionally, this interface shows how the model might struggle with questions that have no clear answer, offering insights into detecting possible hallucinations. For example, when asked to list famous people with an interpunct in their name, the model shows low confidence in its guesses. This behavior indicates uncertainty and can be an indicator of a forthcoming incorrect response. Hallucinations and Confidence Scores The discussion also touches on the question of whether low confidence scores can help detect hallucinations—cases where the model generates false information. While low confidence often correlates with potential hallucinations, it’s not a foolproof indicator. Some hallucinations may come with high confidence, while low-confidence tokens might simply reflect natural variability in language. For instance, when asked about the capital of Kazakhstan, the model shows uncertainty due to the historical changes between Astana and Nur-Sultan. The confidence scores reflect this inconsistency, highlighting how the model can still select an answer despite having conflicting information. Using Confidence Scores in Code The next part of the discussion covers how to leverage confidence scores programmatically. For simple yes/no questions, it’s possible to compress the response into a single token and calculate the confidence score using OpenAI’s API. Key API settings include: Using this setup, one can extract the model’s confidence in its response, converting log probabilities back into regular probabilities using math.exp. Expanding to Real-World Applications The post extends this concept to more complex scenarios, such as verifying whether an image of a driver’s license is valid. By analyzing the model’s confidence in its answer, developers can determine when to flag responses for human review based on predefined confidence thresholds. This technique can also be applied to multiple-choice questions, allowing developers to extract not only the top token but also the top 10 options, along with their confidence scores. Conclusion While confidence scores from LLMs aren’t a perfect solution for detecting accuracy or truthfulness, they can provide useful insights in certain scenarios. With careful application and evaluation, developers can make informed decisions about when to trust the model’s responses and when to intervene. The final takeaway is that confidence scores, while not foolproof, can play a role in improving the reliability of LLM outputs—especially when combined with thoughtful design and ongoing calibration.
