AI-Powered Maternal Care: How Illinois is Tackling the Maternal Health Crisis with Nurse Avery
The Maternal Health Emergency in America
The U.S. maternal health crisis continues to worsen, with 18.6 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2023 (CDC). The disparities are even starker: Black mothers are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white mothers.
The root causes?
✔ Provider shortages – Not enough OB-GYNs, especially in underserved areas.
✔ Lack of proactive care – Many mothers don’t receive consistent check-ins.
✔ Social determinants of health (SDOH) – Food deserts, transportation barriers, and digital divides limit access.
The Solution: An AI Nurse Named Avery
To combat this, Drive Health, Google Public Sector, and the State of Illinois are launching Healthy Baby, a pilot program in Cook County deploying Nurse Avery—an agentic AI-powered nurse designed to provide 24/7 maternal support.
I’m a mom. Been a mom so long my children have children. I’m also a lover of technology. But it is hard to fathom that calm soothing voice of a nurse or doctor on the other end of the phone line when you don’t know what is going on with your pregnancy. So Avery has me very intrigued.
How It Works
- Personalized, Proactive Care
- Nurse Avery monitors expectant mothers weekly, offering:
✔ Nutritional guidance (e.g., folic acid intake)
✔ Vaccination reminders
✔ Chronic disease management
✔ Mental health resources - Unlike human nurses, Avery never sleeps—ensuring continuous care.
- Nurse Avery monitors expectant mothers weekly, offering:
- Culturally Sensitive & Context-Aware
- The AI adapts recommendations based on the patient’s environment.
- Example: If a mother lives in a food desert, Avery won’t suggest an “organic Whole Foods diet”—instead, it provides realistic, accessible alternatives.
- Free Smart Devices to Bridge the Digital Divide
- Participants receive:
✔ Google Pixel phone (with unlimited 5G)
✔ Fitbit wearable (tracks sleep, heart rate, activity) - No app downloads needed—Avery operates via voice-first, conversational AI.
- Participants receive:
- Early Intervention with Real-Time Data
- If Avery detects sudden changes (e.g., sleep disruptions, abnormal heart rates), it:
✔ Checks in with the mother
✔ Alerts clinicians if needed - Doctors monitor trends via a HIPAA-compliant dashboard and adjust care plans.
- If Avery detects sudden changes (e.g., sleep disruptions, abnormal heart rates), it:
Why This Matters
1. Addressing Provider Shortages
- Cook County has a severe lack of maternal care providers, leading to:
✔ More preterm births
✔ Higher NICU admissions
✔ Skyrocketing Medicaid costs - Nurse Avery fills the gap, ensuring every mother gets consistent care.
2. Proactive Care Saves Lives & Money
- Preventive engagement reduces complications, lowering emergency care costs.
- Illinois aims to prove this model works, then expand it nationwide.
3. Breaking Down Barriers
- No smartphones? No problem. The program provides them.
- No tech literacy? Avery uses simple voice commands.
- No transportation? Remote monitoring reduces clinic visits.
The Road Ahead
- July 2024: Pilot launches with 100 mothers in Cook County.
- By end of 2024: Scale to 5,600 participants.
- Long-term goal: National expansion, transforming maternal care in Medicaid and underserved communities.
A Vision for Equitable Care
“Everyone should have access to equitable care—healthy babies, healthy mothers, and safe births, no matter their zip code.”
—James F. Clayborne Jr., Former Illinois State Senator
The Bottom Line
Maternal healthcare is broken—but AI can help fix it.
- Nurse Avery isn’t replacing doctors—it’s extending their reach.
- This isn’t just an Illinois solution—it’s a blueprint for America.
The question is no longer if AI belongs in healthcare—but how fast we can scale it to save lives.
I’m convinced. And more than a little excited that my future grandkids might be carried with this technology!
